Formerly a human ninja and member of the Japanese ninja clan Shirai Ryu, Scorpion is now a hellspawned revenant, inexorably seeking vengeance against those responsible for the destruction of his clan and the death of his family. Although essentialy neutral in allegiance, Scorpion will align with anyone who can assist his plans of revenge. He was once manipulated by Quan Chi, who promised him life in exchange for his impressive combat abilities in order to defeat Sub-Zero. Since Scorpion is a specter, sorcery and supernatural anomalies have proven effective against him in battle; though none have ever succeeded in destroying him in an absolute sense.

Mortal Kombat is a series of fighting games created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. Mortal Kombat began as a series of arcade games, which were picked up by Acclaim Entertainment for the home console versions. Now Midway Games exclusively creates home versions of Mortal Kombat. It is especially noted for its digitized sprites (which differentiated it from its contemporaries' hand-drawn sprites), and its high levels of blood and gore, including, most notably, its graphic fatalities—finishing moves, requiring a sequence of buttons to perform, which, in part, led to the creation of the ESRB. The title itself is also known for replacing the hard c sound with the letter K, thus misspelling the word "combat."
